The Spicers- to Cunninghams Gap is a through walk that includes a steep ascent of Mt. Mitchell via the southeastern ridge. Starting at Spicers Gap via the Mathieson track we enjoy a superb view of the Main Range’s N-E scarpment along Mt. Castle to Spicers Peak.
We have walked this track twice before, last time four years ago and it was popular with many hikers. But it must be said it has a few difficult passages, steep ascents which require fitness, agility and no vertigo. We descent Mt. Mitchell via an extended southern ridge to Spicers Gap road. From there we hike back up to the Governors Chair and return to our cars on a good forestry track. The entire part of this trip is rated as an adventurous full day walk.
Grade L-6-4 This is suitable only for experienced walkers.
Please note that great care is needed around the cliffs
and on a stretch of razorback - with an airy traverse
of about 50m.
As always, good hiking boots, plenty of water, lunch and
some warm wet-weather gear are a must. Please book
this trip and rsvp in advance by contacting us as per below.
Alternate Route There may be some club members
who would like to do an easy half day walk along the
Mt. Mathieson circuit track. This offers most of the
good views and returns to Spicers Gap in about 4 Hrs.
